The exhibition "David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away)" grand opening at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai

April 29, 2025, Shanghai – The West Bund Museum will unveil an unprecedented artistic experience: David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away), the first immersive digital exhibition by contemporary art master David Hockney. Co-created and overseen by Hockney himself over three years, the exhibition showcases his latest explorations in digital mediums, marking one of the artist’s most experimental ventures to date.
David Hockney not only created some of the 20th century’s most iconic images but has also transformed painting into a visual laboratory. He has explored how optical tools shaped Western art and redefined our ways of "seeing" the world and imagery through innovations like photographic collages, fax machines, digital paintings (including iPad and iPhone works), and multi-screen immersive installations. Openly embracing new technologies, he integrates them into the very fabric of painterly expression. This exhibition crystallizes his lifelong investigation into the multiplicity of visual experience.
Far from a conventional retrospective, the show is a vibrant reinvention—Hockney’s signature works are reanimated in immersive environments, while never-before-seen creations emerge through digital media. Visitors will step into Hockney’s visual cosmos, witnessing how his digital brushstrokes reinterpret nature, space, and perception. The dance of water ripples, the morphing of seasons, and the pulsating Californian sunlight gain new vitality through dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
Presented by OUTPUT in collaboration with London’s Lightroom and 59 Studio, the exhibition will run from April 29 to November 30, 2025, at the West Bund Museum’s Creativity Gallery. Here, Hockney’s lifelong experimentation with new media unfolds in full force, inviting audiences to rediscover and reimagine the world through his visionary lens.

In a cycle of six themed chapters, with a specially composed score by Nico Muhly and a commentary by the artist himself, Hockney reveals his process to us. We hear his voice as we watch him experimenting with perspective, using photography as a way of 'drawing with a camera', capturing the passing of time in his polaroid collages and the joy of spring on his iPad. He shows us why only paint can properly convey the hugeness of the Grand Canyon. We join him on his audio-visual Wagner Drive, roaring up into the San Gabriel Mountains, and go into the opera house by means of animated re-creations of his stage designs.

From LA to Yorkshire to Normandy, the show is an unprecedented opportunity to spend time in the presence of one of the great popular geniuses of the art world - still innovating, still creating beauty and awe.
"The world is very very beautiful if you look at it, but most people don't look very much. They scan the ground in front of them so they can walk, they don't really look at things incredibly well, with an intensity. I do."
David Hockney, from the soundtrack of 'Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away)'
The artist has a deep connection with China. In his early years, Hockney visited China and compiled his travel experiences into a series titled "China Diary." In his own artistic creations which followed, he introduced the concepts of "shifting perspectives" and "scattered-point perspective" from Chinese painting, offering a fresh visual experience. This show is the result of three years of creative work by David Hockney and his team alongside the teams at Lightroom and 59 Studio, and marks the artist's first retrospective presented through digital media.
The show was directed by Mark Grimmer of 59 Studio. Since debuting in London’s Lightroom in February 2023, Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) has also been shown in Manchester, UK, and Seoul in South Korea. It has been widely acclaimed by international audiences and highly praised by authoritative media outlets such as The Times, The Independent and The Observer. Now, this amazing work, is being presented in China for the first time. OUTPUT is exclusively introducing the exhibition to China with the co-operation of the artist and Lightroom. The exhibition will tour to other cities in China, allowing more audiences to experience the world through Hockney’s eyes -an experience that is visually astonishing, alive with sound and rich in new perspectives.
About Artist
David Hockney has been at the forefront of the international art world for more than six decades. He emerged as one of the exceptional talents in the new generation of British artists in the early 1960s. Throughout his extraordinarily prolific career, he remains endlessly inventive and committed to celebrating the world around him.
Hockney is fascinated by the language of representation in a variety of forms. He explores the conventions of Chinese and Japanese painting as well as the traditions of European art. Throughout his career, Hockney has created many bodies of works as well as individual paintings which are now viewed as iconic. His experimental paintings in the early sixties signaled the emergence of a new artistic style. In 1964, Hockney moved to Los Angeles where he created his celebrated swimming pool series, documenting the city’s seductive charm and ambience from the position of an outsider.
Hockney’s intellectual curiosity has led him to explore how we perceive the world. The artist’s use of new technologies extends his interest in creating images using different means. From his photographic collages and fax machine drawings to his iPad paintings, he seeks to explore all the possibilities offered by technology in the creation of art,and create new ways of seeing and presenting.
David Hockney's rich and enduring body of work reveals his passion for life and curiosity about the world, epitomized by his signature phrase, “Love Life.”
